PHUNCO is presently based on a FreePBX instance designed to be hacked and attacked (KIDDING) but exposed to the outside world on a business class internet that allows anything to come in (well with firewall policies at the Layer 3 side.) Future attempts is to run solely on Asterisk (yeah the CLI only, the bare gears lol!) It can’t be worse than configuring CallManager Express!
Other information
- It operates against the open internet with Well-Known and Alternative Ports for SIP, and RTP as well as down-low NTP domain-name to sync your phones to the PHUNCO time
- Currently in a virtualized Proxmox instance
- Future plans is to move it to an old MacBook with integrated Uninterruptible Power Supplies
- The quasi DMZ is boring so don’t try to break into anything critical!
- 100% uptime†, with some uptimes up to 120 to 200 days
- It’s best to have a Session Border Controller like a Kamillo which is a future plan
- Security is traded off to support vintage sets and greater compatibility with no intentions of confidentiality
†Well with UPS and multiple points of entry makes it appear to be “100%” on the Layer 3 device – sometimes operating systems hang, systems will crash which the uptime is close to 99.99%.

“Supported Devices”
(translation: phones I have that work)

The Polycom VVX line (it can support standard SIP ports or alternative. It also supports backup SIP domains in case the primary goes down.

The Mitel 5300 series and the 5200 series (ONLY IN SIP), supports flexibility of ports for SIP and RTP. It also works fine under PJSIP. According to historical documentation, the SIP mode on the Mitels was to provide basic dial tone and basic calling features intended for remote users. It was never designed to replace the legacy MiNet IP phones or it’s accessories. Fancy Landlines with an IP stack

The Aastra 480i (and related models for it’s time) should be compatible with phunco with support to choose specific SIP ports and backup addresses for call control
Granstream HandyTones and other IP sets have not been verified as of this writing.
Unsupported…”I have a Cisco SCCP or an Avaya 4600 or a UniSTIM phone? I cannot connect?”
It’s strongly urged in these types of sets to have some local FreePBX or Asterisk or even a Cisco CME with a SIP trunk acting as a PHUNCO extension. Generally speaking sets such as…
- Avaya’s 9600 or 4600 SIP loaded sets
- Cisco’s SCCP loaded sets or
- Nortel’s proprietary UuiSTIM
if were connected remotely would need some gateway that is outdated and insecure. (Oh wait you waived off security by joining PHUNCO), they can work in open SIP with very degraded features, in that case it’s best to keep some call controller and SIP trunk in.
